Why Black Hair Edges Thin First: The Science Behind Traction and Hair Loss

Your edges have been fighting a battle you were never told about.

For years, we blamed ourselves. Too tight. Too often. Not enough oil. But the truth was hiding in our own biology the whole time, and nobody handed us the memo.

Under your scalp, tiny elastic fibers support each hair follicle, connecting it to the layer of skin beneath. They let your hair move a little when something pulls on it.

A 2023 review in the International Journal of Women's Dermatology cites research showing that afro-textured hair has fewer of these supporting fibers compared to Caucasian hair.

That matters more than it sounds. It means the same tight bun, the same tight cornrow, the same tight weave, can pull harder on our edges than it would on someone with more elastic support.

This is not about giving up buns, cornrows, or weaves. It is about knowing why our edges thin first. Why they break first. Why that slow line of hair loss creeps in before anyone notices.

For years, we were told we just styled our hair too tight or too often. That is part of the story. But there is also a structural reason our edges are more vulnerable, and most of us were never told about it.

So here is what to do with it.

  • Reduce all styling that places tension on your edges - Do not pull it tight just to make it look neat.
  • Check your hairline - If it feels red or sore, that is your scalp asking you to loosen up.
  • Keep your scalp and hairline moist - Dry hair snaps faster under pressure.
  • Give your edges a rest between styles -The same pull, in the same spot, again and again, is what turns a small strain into real hair loss.
I am not saying this to scare you off buns, cornrows, or weaves. These styles are part of who we are. I am saying this so you can wear them and still protect your hair.

This is why I always say learn your hair before you buy another product. No oil can add more supporting fibers to your scalp. But knowing how your hair works can stop a lot of damage before it starts.

Your edges are not weak. They are built differently. And that means they need a gentler hand.

A small note on the science:

Because this deserves honesty, not just a good headline. The 2023 finding comes from a review article, not a new lab study. That means the authors were summarizing and citing existing research on hair follicle anatomy, not running new tests themselves. The comparison in that research was specifically afro-textured hair against Caucasian hair, not every hair type.

This is exactly why we need more research built around us, not research that treats us as an afterthought. So much of what we know about afro hair biology comes from small studies, older data, or research designed with other hair types as the default and ours as the variation. We deserve dedicated, well-funded studies that start with our hair as the subject, not the footnote. Until then, we work with the best evidence available, we stay honest about what it does and does not prove, and we keep asking for better.

What we already know is enough to change how tight we wrap, how often, and how kind we are to our edges.
