It was once expected that black women would relax, straighten or put their hair in extensions for the stage or screen. But we are delighted that things are changing.

While I think it's a little disappointing that there needs to be a mindset shift to inspire people to cherish their natural beauty and wear their own hair, I also accept that beauty standards are so powerful and they have a chokehold on all of us to varying degrees. This is why I am especially ecstatic that an increasing number of Black women are proudly returning to their natural hair while challenging these erroneous standards. It's especially inspiring to see Black celebrities embrace their natural texture since they can inspire young black females to feel confident in their appearance.
