5 Habits That Can Damage Your Hair

5 Habits That Can Damage Your Hair

Having healthy, beautiful hair doesn't happen by accident. It takes consistent care and avoiding certain harmful behaviors.

Here are 5 of the most damaging things you can do to your hair

1. Over-Washing

Washing your hair too frequently can strip away the natural oils that keep it healthy and hydrated. Aim to wash no more than once a week if you have afro textured hair and  2-3 times per week if you have Caucasian hair. Over-washing can lead to dryness, brittleness, and frizz.

2. Excessive Heat Styling

Blow drying, straightening, and curling with hot tools can seriously damage hair over time. The high heat breaks down the hair's protein structure and leads to split ends, breakage, and loss of shine. Try to limit heat styling to once or twice a month at medium heat if you have afro textured hair. And once a week for Caucasian and other types of hair.  Always use a heat protectant product.

3. Harsh Chemical Treatments

Coloring, bleaching, perming, and other chemical hair treatments can be incredibly damaging. The chemicals penetrate the hair shaft and compromise its integrity. If you do colour or chemically treat your hair, be sure to use a deeply nourishing conditioner or hair mask regularly.

4. Over reliance on braids

Many people are still reluctant to accept that braiding with added hair, especially if you have thin strands, with low density, can be problematic if done frequently. And as you get older your hair often can't cope. Yes, these styles can be enjoyed once in a while, but they should not be your strategy for healthier hair. The added hair is harsh on the hair strands because it sucks out moisture and can be abrasive to hair. The tension on the scalp is often too much for many and those who are allergic to the coating on the extensions used (if you experience itching after braids you are most likely allergic)  should really consider minimising this style.

5. Lack of Moisture

Dry, brittle hair is prone to damage, split ends, and breakage. Make sure you're using a well formulated conditioner,  topped with a superior oil designed to meet the needs of afro textured hair. Drinking plenty of water and using a humidifier can also help keep hair healthy and moisturised.

In Summary

By avoiding these common hair mistakes, you can keep your hair strong and healthy for years to come!
