5 Essential Questions To Ask Your Trichologist Before Starting Treatment

A message by an Alumni of the Ori Lifestyle Hair Course was sent to our master group this week and the question read. "Good morning ladies, has anyone ever had a consultation with Trichologist? I’ve booked an initial consultation with her this week and wanted advise on expectations/questions to ask… Please do share insight… thank you".

Her question prompted this blog so thank you Oluwafunmilayo.

When consulting a Trichologist  (a scalp and hair specialist), asking the right questions can help you understand your hair concerns better and get effective treatment. Here are the top 5 questions to ask:

What is the root cause of my hair/scalp issue?
Understanding whether your hair loss, thinning, or scalp condition is due to genetics, hormones, stress, diet, or an underlying medical condition is crucial for proper treatment. I have heard clients say they have a treatment plan without being able to say what the diagnosis was which was slightly concerning. Unless of course there is a reason for this which should be clearly explained to you.

A Trichologist may recommend blood tests (e.g., iron, thyroid, vitamin D), scalp biopsies, or trichoscopy (microscopic scalp analysis) to pinpoint the issue accurately.  Do not be put off if they refer you to a Dermatologist for this. A multi-disciplinary approach is sometimes needed for effective treatment.

What treatment options do you recommend, and are they evidence-based?

Ask about medical treatments e.g., minoxidil, PRP, finasteride, natural remedies or lifestyle changes (diet, stress management) that have scientific backing. I emphasise SCIENTIFIC BACKING. And equally important backing for your own type of conditions! I’ve seen clients spend a fortune on PRP only to discover that it does not work for their own type of hair loss.

How long will it take to see results, and what’s the prognosis?

Hair growth cycles take time, so setting realistic expectations is important. Ask if your condition is reversible or manageable long-term.

Should I see a dermatologist or endocrinologist for further evaluation?
Some hair issues may require hormonal or autoimmune testing.

1. Detailed Medical & Lifestyle History
The trichologist will ask about:
- Family history of hair loss (androgenetic alopecia, etc.)
- Recent illnesses, stress levels, or hormonal changes (e.g., pregnancy, menopause, PCOS)
- Diet (iron, protein, vitamin deficiencies)
- Hair care habits (heat styling, chemical treatments, tight hairstyles)
- Medications (birth control, thyroid meds, antidepressants)

2. Scalp & Hair Examination
- Visual Inspection– Checking for redness, scaling (dandruff, psoriasis), or scarring.
- Trichoscopy (if available) – A magnified scalp scan to assess hair density, miniaturization, and follicle health.
Pull Test– Gently tugging hairs to check for excessive shedding.

3. Possible Diagnostic Tests
- Blood tests (if not done already) – Iron, ferritin, vitamin D, thyroid (TSH), testosterone, etc.
- Scalp biopsy (rare, for scarring alopecia for example ).

4. Personalised Treatment Plan
- Depending on the diagnosis, they may recommend:
- Topical treatments (minoxidil, ketoconazole shampoo)
- Oral supplements ( iron, zinc)
- Lifestyle changes (stress management, diet adjustments)
- Advanced therapies (PRP, low-level laser therapy)

✔ Bring photos of your hair over time (helps track progression).
✔ List all hair products you currently use.
✔ Note recent changes (weight loss, illness, new medications).
✔ Avoid washing hair 1-2 days before (helps in scalp analysis).
